Chickens 2009

Well, we picked up the first batch of chicks this afternoon. These are the laying hens, 3 Golden laced Wyandottes and 3 Silver laced wyandottess. The look pretty similar as peeps. We only got 6 because we wanted to make sure how many eggs they would produce and other stuff. They are settling into the brooder. When we stopped at Tractor Supply to pick up the wood chips for their bedding I tried to talk Paul into letting me get some more chicks (they had 5 different breeds) but they had a minimum purchase of 6 and Paul said no way were we going to have 12 laying hens. So here are the pictures, sorry they are a bit blurry (I'm not very good with the digital camera).

Here they are in the box before we placed them in the brooder.

Here they are trying to stay warm before we turned on the heat lamp. Belive it or not all 6 are huddled here!

I wanted you to be able to see how small they are in comparison to my hand. Sorry about the red light, that is the heat lamp.

Once these chicks are full grown, how often do they produce an egg? Is it daily? Weekly? Do you guys own a rooster?

I think it's wonderful how you two have successfully gotten into this whole farm-style environment.

Good work!
